Manuscript Submission Guidelines

Breakwater Books Ltd. accepts manuscripts in all genres; however, the company publishes almost no science fiction or fantasy. Also, we receive nearly 150 manuscripts each year for children's stories and can publish only one.

If you wish to submit a manuscript sample to Breakwater Books for publication consideration please follow the guidelines below:
(Download Adobe PDF: Submissions.pdf)

  • Submit a cover letter indicating the genre, subject matter, the intended audience, and length (word count, not page count) of the entire manuscript; include brief biographical information indicating writing experience, credentials and awards or award nominations if applicable.
  • Enclose a summary (non-fiction) or synopsis (fiction) and the first 10-15 pages of the completed manuscript. Please do not send your entire manuscript, except in the case of children's books. Do not send your only copy or original artwork or photographs.
  • The manuscript sample should be double-spaced, with 12-pt. type. Please use standard style (paragraphs indented 5 spaces, no extra space between paragraphs) in the manuscript sample, not block style (paragraphs not indented).
  • Enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope for a response. Breakwater Books will not respond to any submission that does not include a SASE. If you wish to have your manuscript sample returned, enclose a large enough envelope with sufficient postage.
  • If you wish to be assured that we have received your submission, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped postcard. Please do not call or email.
  • Please allow us at least six months to review your submission.

Submissions sent via email will not be accepted.

All manuscript submissions must be made by mail to the following address:
